Largest reformists gathering planned for Merdeka day

A 'reformasi' website has called for the largest gathering of reformists on 31 August 2001 to celebrate the nation's 44th independence day. The website, Le Tour Reformasi also makes five 'independence day' demands - of which, Mahathir's resignation tops the list.

This is the boldest attempt yet since last year's '100,000 People's Rally' made by any opposition parties or reform activists to hold a 'reformasi' public rally. Last year, the gathering had to take place along an expressway after massive police forces were deployed to block roads leading to the venue.

More than fifty were arrested, with several of them suffering serious injuries after police forces fired tear gas canisters directly towards opposition supporters. One was aimed at keADILan president Dr. Wan Azizah, however it hit a bystander who was hospitalized in the intensive care unit for almost a week.

Previous public rallies had to be aborted when police sealed off entries into the nation's capital.

This time around, reformists believe it will be much more difficult for the police to deploy disproportionate force against them, since thousands of revelers will travel to Kuala Lumpur to celebrate government's organized events celebrating the day.

The police either have to seal off the capital completely and risk turning the events a mockery, or allow reformists to exercise their rights to gather peacefully.

Le Tour Reformasi has also specified meeting points for reformists, though some say they could be decoys to dupe the police intelligence, the notorious Special Branch.

    Le Tour a success: activists

Some activists met yesterday at the 'Le Tour de Reformasi' event organised by an anonymous reformasi website conceded that the number of people who turned up was a far cry from earlier reformasi gatherings, such as the '100,000 People's Rally' at Kesas Expressway last year. Nevertheless, they said, the event should not be over-interpreted as a sign of waning support for the reform movement in the country.

Since Anwar Ibrahim's sacking in 1998, the country has witnessed a series of public rallies unprecedented in its short history. A rally in Kota Bharu pulled a crowd of 50,000 people in 1998, while reports said that the last rally delivered by Anwar on 20 September 1998 was attended by no less than 150,000 people.

Last year, a rally which had to be convened along an expressway pulled 50,000 people, though the mainstream media quoted only 5,000 to play down the sentiment against the ruling coalition.

Although only 1,000 people joined the rally which ended peacefully at Sogo yesterday, an ardent reformasi supporter, who did not wish to be identified for security reasons, argued that the number was consistent with previous rallies held in the heart of the capital.

He said, 'Le Tour de Reformasi' could not be compared to the Kesas rally, as people had to travel to the heart of Kuala Lumpur - which means bypassing the numerous blockades around the capital. He also pointed out that many people left for their hometowns for the long weekend holidays.

"The fact that there are still 1,000 who turned up - despite the intimidation - is a proof that the spirit of reformasi is still burning," he commented.

Contrast this with events organised by the government, which hardly attract 100 people, he said further. This is despite security guarantee by the police, pocket money, T-shirts and food provided for participants.

He also said that events such as 'Le Tour de Reformasi' are a stark reminder of the power of Internet and SMS.

"Think, the power behind the website which could attract 1,000 people to risk arrest and beatings, despite the anonymity of the organisers," he said.

According to him, this is because reformasi activists believe strongly in the message of reforms.
