    SMS to mobilize the masses

KUALA Lumpur (FAC News): The Internet "exploded" onto the Malaysian scene just before Anwar Ibrahim’s sacking on Wednesday, 2 September 1998. The first Reformasi Website, Anwar Online, hosted by a Malaysian server, made its debut a day before Mahathir announced to the world that he had sacked his deputy for being "a sodomist".

By Saturday, 5 September 1998, the number of "hits" touched 1 million, a world record that, somehow, never entered the Malaysian Book of Records. By midnight that same day, the Website crashed. Rumours were aplenty that the government had "bombed" the Website. The truth is, the server could not handle the volume and it crashed. By Monday morning the Website was relocated overseas and it was soon back in business.

The rest, as they say, is now history and there is presently a prolific of Reformasi Websites giving the government an extremely hard time. Malaysian Prime Minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad had dragged his nation of 23 million screaming and kicking into the cyber age with the launch of the Multimedia Super-corridor or MSC. Mahathir had created a "monster" that not even he could now control and the opposition used the Internet to the maximum with impressive results.

By the Tenth General Elections on 29 November 1999, the number of Internet users had reached half a million. Today, it hovers around 2 million and is expected to hit 4 million by the next General Elections expected some time in 2004. But 4 million is pittance compared to 24 million Malaysians or compared to the estimated 11-12 millions registered voters in the coming General Elections. The Internet reach is still too small and, at 20%, is way below that of Singapore or the United States. Reformasi needs a more efficient and wider reach, something they can use to reach ALL Malaysians – and they have found this in SMS or cellphone text messaging.

The power of SMS proved itself awhile back in the Philippines. The record SMS text messages sent in any one day in the Philippines was during Christmas, when 40 million Christmas greeting messages were sent. This record was broken when it doubled to 80 million. And the message sent was - calling all Filipinos to converge onto the Malacanyang Palace to oust the President.

Today, Reformasi is developing its SMS network along the same lines – and they hope to achieve the same results. The test would be this Friday, 31 August 2001.

The Reformists are planning to celebrate the 31 August National Day in its own way. It is planning "Le Tour De Reformasi". (More details on https://tourreformasi.tripod.com/ )Through the Internet, ceramahs (rallies), word-of-mouth, phone calls, and not to be left out - SMS text messages - the Reformists are mobilizing people from all over Malaysia to converge onto the National Mosque for Friday prayers. After that, at around 2.30pm, they will march onto Dataran Merdeka, "home" to the Reformasi movement, to call for Mahathir’s resignation. They are calling for 50,000 cars from all over Malaysia to come down to Kuala Lumpur.

Will it succeed? Will SMS pave the way for the latest in mass communication and mobilization? Only this Friday can tell. One thing for sure though, if the Reformists succeed, the anticipated crowd will choke Kuala Lumpur and bring the city to a standstill. Another thing for sure, the police will try to thwart the Reformists’ plan for, if it is allowed to succeed, this will bring about the demise of Mahathir’s rule.

There is already speculation that another round of arrests under the Internal Security Act is inevitable – and this time the net may have to be widened. The police cannot allow this plan to go on. But whom do they arrest? The organisers are keeping a low profile for fear that they would become police "targets". In the past it was easy to identify the "culprits". This time around, it could be just about anybody. And to get their "right men", the police will need to rope in all possible organisers hoping that, in that large net, some right ones would be included.

The opposition is already drawing up the possible police "hit list" to preempt any possible police roundup. They will soon be broadcasting the list to warn the nation of the expected crackdown. This may put the government is a dilemma for if they now do roundup those on the hit list it would be seen as victimizing the opposition.

31 August 2001 may yet prove to be a National Day celebration to be remembered for a long time to come.

    Perhimpunan aman reformasi berjalan lancar
